Our responsibility

The global problems of climate catastrophe and growing social ills affect every one of us.

As a family business, we are particularly concerned with strengthening our planet and our society for future generations.

We would be happy to inform you about what we are doing and planning for this.

Three pillars of sustainability:
Environment, Social, Economy

Ricano sustainability at a glance

  • No forced labor in our supply chain
  • Long-term partnerships with our production sites
  • Extremely diverse corporate culture
  • Ecological
  • Controlled wastewater processes in tanning
  • 50% participation in CO2 compensation of our customers
  • CO2-neutral logistics and delivery
  • Economical
  • New fashion lines with sustainability as a basic requirement

Sustainable fashion

Many things play into the idea of sustainable fashion: how long a garment is worn, how often it needs to be washed, how it was produced, where the materials come from, and how and on what routes they and the end product were transported. Leather clothing is a particularly complicated subject

Ricano only uses leather that is already produced by the meat industry anyway - no animals are kept or bred especially for our fashion.

But even though leather would otherwise compost in landfills and release more greenhouse gases, we don't consider leather just a waste product. Read more at:

How we offset CO2

Our calculation for CO2 compensation (per leather jacket*)

There are three different ways of looking at CO2 emissions from leather:

  • Leather is a waste product of the food industry.
When this decays in landfills, CO2 is released. Leather clothing reduces CO2 because it prevents this waste.
  • Leather is a by-product of the food industry.
Since leather still ends up in landfills, no additional CO2 is produced for leather. So leather is CO2 neutral in itself
  • Leather contributes to CO2 emissions just as much as the food industry.
    We ignore composting leather waste.
Our charts explain how these three perspectives affect the CO2 emissions we use as the basis for our offsetting.

*We used two square meters of the particularly climate-damaging cowhide as the basis for one jacket. This is the average material requirement for a men's leather jacket.

Ladies leather jackets, pants, skirts, bags, etc. and those made of lambskin or goatskin are accordingly more climate-friendly. However, we do not want to make it so easy for ourselves and therefore calculate based on the worst case for all items. The climate thanks you for this math basis Sources of the calculations

214.5kg CO2 for Lederjacke: the climate crisis knows no easy way out

The various considerations on the CO2 emissions of a single leather jacket illustrate how complicated the issue of sustainable fashion is.

We're not taking the easy way out just yet and choosing the least favorable perspective - that's how we make sure we really make a difference with our CO2 offsetting. So if you choose CO2 offsetting when you make your purchase, you can be sure that you are not polluting the climate. Practically, you ensure a CO2 reduction in our athmosphere and thus actively do something against the climate catastrophe.

We will cover half of the costs if you opt for CO2 compensation when making your purchase, thus making our contribution to climate protection. Ideally, despite your climate-neutral purchase, you follow the simplest principle of sustainable fashion: care for and wear your new product as long as at all possible. Because the best consumption for our planet is still no consumption.
